WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is a treatment where thin needles are inserted at specific points on your body. This treatment originates in Traditional Chinese Medicine where the flow of energy is considered essential to health. When you are healthy, energy flows smoothly through the meridians that make up a network of pathways throughout your entire body. When the flow is deficient or obstructed, you may be susceptible to illness. Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of pain, sciatica, arthritis, headaches, and many other conditions.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Acupuncture works by stimulating the De Qi along energy pathways called Meridians. This causes many different biological responses both at the needle site and at a distance (in our nervous system). The Ancient Chinese medicine states that it will “heal through the blood” - the De Qi sensation you feel encourages blood flow, which releases chemicals that help the area heal. Some research has shown that acupuncture leads to the release of opioid peptides which help to manage pain.
DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?
Acupuncture is a gentle treatment. Most people find the treatments relaxing and cause minimal discomfort. Acupuncture needles are very fine (as thin as a hair), leading to a painless insertion into the skin. Every person experiences acupuncture differently, but most feel no pain or very minimal pain. You may experience a feeling of warmth or mild aching sensation around the site of insertion.
IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
Acupuncture is safe and effective with few adverse effects and complications reported from its use. The most common of which were nausea and fainting. Our practitioner uses single-use, clean, sterile disposable needles, that are never reused, and are safely disposed.
